" Some people have to travel to exotic places or risk their lives on the front lines to find interesting topics. Gáti goes down to the store and finds them on the way."– Bertalan Csala

His first solo exhibition was organized by the Taurus Cultural Center with the help of cartoonist László Kertész N. In 1986, the MÚOSZ headquarters provided space for his exhibition entitled “JAZZ POP ROCK...”.
In 1989, his exhibition entitled ÍGY ÜLTÖK TI (This is how you sit), whose pictures were taken in the Parliament Building, was displayed on the walls of the Péter Pál Gallery in Szentendre and opened by László Földes Hobo. In 2001, he organized an exhibition entitled FIATALFA / YOUNGTREE at the Nero M5 Alfa Romeo showroom. (It was opened by photo historian Klára Szarka and journalist and editor-in-chief András Földvári).
His exhibition entitled FŐVÁMHÁZ (Main Customs House), which was opened by Attila Chikán, rector of the University of Economics, was hosted by the Sóház in 2002. In the same year, the exhibition entitled SZABADSÁG-HÍD (Freedom Bridge) was presented at the Flamenco Hotel by Mayor Gyula Molnár, and the following year, Klára Szarka presented the exhibition entitled A HÍD – RÉSZLETEK (The Bridge – Details) at the Raiffeisen Gallery. Also in 2003, the Soós Gallery invited the exhibition ELSŐ VÁLOGATÁS (FIRST SELECTION) to Mohács.
Demeter Balla and Zsolt Hegyi selected the material for the online exhibition FRANCIA KAPCSOLAT (FRENCH CONNECTION), which Gáti had created the previous year in France with the help of the André Kertész scholarship he had won. In 2005, he organized the exhibition ELEVEN (11) COLORS at the Karinthy Salon in Budapest. In Leányfalu, his photographs taken in connection with the film Konyec, entitled “This is how you shoot,” were displayed on the walls of the Village House. Iván Andrassew gave the opening speech here.
In 2007, he was invited for the first time to the Kapolcs Valley of Arts, where the audience could view his material entitled TITKOS VISZONYOK (Secret Relationships) at the Teleház in Taliándörögd. The following year, he exhibited in Kapolcs, at the Falumalom, under the title VÖLGY-ESTÉK (Valley Evenings). In 2008, the Foto Mozaik Gallery showed his photos in an online exhibition entitled WINDOWS 2008. In 2009, he accepted an invitation from MÜPA and curator Éva Hajdú, together with Ferenc Markovics, to exhibit their joint work entitled MA/GÁT FOTÓZTÁK (They Photographed MA/GÁT).
In the summer of the same year, he photographed in Ustron, Poland, the twin town of Újbuda. He exhibited the photos taken there at the Karinthy Salon in Újbuda under the title SZENT PÉTER TENYERÉN – USTRONI ANZIXOK (On St. Peter's Palm – Ustron Anzioks). Art historian Ildikó D. Udvary praised the exhibition at the opening.
He spent the winter of 2010 in Finland as the winner of a competition, as a delegate of the Hungarian National Museum's Historical Photo Archive, and at the invitation of The Centre of Creative Photography in Jyväskylä. That summer, a selection of the photos taken there were displayed in the exhibition hall of the Teleház in Taliándörögd as part of the Valley of Arts event, entitled EMIGRANTS TOUCHED EUROPE.
In 2010, he had his first solo exhibition abroad: Galleria Harmonia in Jyväskylä hosted his exhibition GÁTI/KAPA, created in collaboration with Martti Kapanen. As part of the same project, he was invited by Lucia Benicka, director of Dom Fotografie in Liptovský Mikuláš, to participate in a joint exhibition with Petra Cepková entitled STORIES AND HANDS.
In 2011, he received another invitation to Jyväskylä, where his landscape exhibition “FINLANDSCAPES” was displayed on the walls of Galleria Harmonia.
In the summer of 2010, with the help of Tamás Török, an exhibition of 65 large-scale photographs entitled ÉRZÉK – KÉPEK AZ ANTROPOSZFÉRÁBÓL (SENSATION – IMAGES FROM THE ANTHROPOSPHERE) was created in the Budapest Exhibition Hall of the Budapest Gallery. It was opened by critic Miklós Fáy and museum director Péter Baki, with Mariann Falusi singing.
In 2015, as part of a series of events celebrating 100-year-old houses, the basement exhibition FÉNYFELTÁRÁS (Light Discovery) was created in the basement of an apartment building in Újbuda with the curatorial support of Géza Boros. (Title: Eszter Saródy)
In 2017, the relationship established with Zsófi Faur in Taliándörögd in 2007 matured into an exhibition, and “NEKEM VALÓ VILÁG” (A WORLD FOR ME) was held at the Zsófi Faur Gallery in Budapest. Here, Oscar-winning film director Kristóf Deák spoke about Gáti's works.
In 2019, he participated in a joint exhibition with painter Dénesh Ghyczy entitled PANORAMIC VISION, which was opened by writer Péter Gerőcs, followed by his solo exhibition REVISION.
In 2020, under the title “BUDAPEST-KÉPEK” (BUDAPEST IMAGES), the B32 Gallery in Újbuda, in collaboration with Nézőművészeti Kft., created an exhibition and a stage performance combined with a screening, by members of the Young Writers' Association, presenting works written about the works of György Gáti.
In September 2020, the Artphoto Gallery opened the exhibition TÜKRÖM-TÜKRÖM / MIRROR, MIRROR – KRONSTADT exhibition opened at the Artphoto Gallery, which was opened by Russianist András Soproni and showcased Gáti's cultural anthropological material photographed during his month-long residency in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 2014, on special acrylic photos.
In 2022, he held another solo exhibition entitled POSITIVE at the Faur Zsófi Gallery in Budapest. "The human figures hidden in his paintings, the exciting shapes and unusual textures generate deeper philosophical and sociological associations. Although the paintings were created in different places and at different times, thanks to the exhibition design, they are connected to each other and take on entirely new meanings. Thus, the absurdities and problems of today's world are revealed to us behind the seemingly simple choice of subject matter and the minimalist visual tools," writes INDEX Nagykép about the exhibition.
In 2023, the Újbuda Gallery hosted the exhibition UPWARDS / UPWARDS exhibition, which art historian Szonja Szurop described in her opening speech as “Gáti transforms familiar urban motifs into a sacred aesthetic experience, which is an artistic representation of the universal hierarchy.”
November 2024 marks an important milestone in Gáti's career: he hung his PASSAGE material on the walls of the B32 Gallery, a selection of works from the last two years, which, in contrast to his previous purely photographic works, are more photo-based, colourful works of fine art.
In July 2025, as a continuation of PASSAGE, he will take his new exhibition entitled NEONBAROCK to Stuttgart, which was created as a result of the sister city relationship between ÚJBUDA and Stuttgart, at the Amtsgericht Gallery in Bad Cannstatt, Stuttgart.
----
"... this is refined puritanism. Gáti uses depth of field and cropping to manipulate space, but in the same way as an instrument. He cuts out small pieces and reveals the insect-like perspective of individuals on the ‘big and strange’ outside world. "
György Jerovetz (Magyar Narancs, 29 July 2010)
"His latest series also testifies to a kind of change of perspective, to freedom and the joy of unclouded creation. His previously taut, consciously composed, visually powerful photographs now appear layered on top of each other, reinforcing, extending or even reducing each other according to the artist's intention reduced, in the form of unique universes. This is a patient game with technique, where both patience and playfulness are inherent in Gáti's working method, but the creative process transcends the entertaining superficiality of “play” and induces a deeper interpretation. Unlike his earlier imaging practice, this gives rise to an even more painterly reality, where the creator takes a more active part in the creation of new worlds.

Album covers
Gáti, who was himself a trained musician and had been preparing for a career in music since the late 1970s, photographed bands and then, in the early 1980s, with the support of György Hegedűs, one of the busiest photographers at the Hanglemezgyár record label, began photographing album covers.
His first published work was the 1980 album Középeurópai Hobo Blues by the Hobo Blues Band, for which he took the group photo on the back cover. Two interesting features of the album are that the photographer appears in the middle of the group photo on a reflective surface and sings on several tracks as a member of the Középeurópai Kórus (Central European Choir). In 1981, he photographed the band KFT in the stairwell of the Hungarian Television headquarters on Szabadság Square for their single Tea / Nem sikerül Kikúrálnom magam (Tea / I Can't Get Myself Together).
His 1982 work was the concert photos for the insert of the Hobo Blues Band's album cover Oly sokáig voltunk lenn (We Were Down for So Long). He photographed the cover photos for György Korda's LP Nézz rám és énekeljünk (Look at Me and Let's Sing) at the Korda Villa.
In the same year, he took the cover photo for Miklós Galla's band GM49's single Kötöde.
In 1983, he photographed the cover of the Rajkó band's album and György Korda's album Nézz rám és énekeljünk (Look at Me and Let's Sing).
He then took a photo in front of a painted wall in Budapest's eighth district for László Komár's album Halványkék szemek (Light Blue Eyes). In 1984, he photographed the cover for LGT's giant single and the Hit band's album Oké.
He took the cover photo for the KFT band's album Bál az operában (Ball at the Opera) in the courtyard of the Kiscelli Museum, with concert photos of the band on the back cover. He photographed the album covers for the Kaláka band, Judit Szánti, Gyula Vikidál, and the Budapest Symphony Orchestra in 1985.
At the request of Gábor Presser, he photographed Sándor Révész's first solo album in 1985. After two photo shoots in unusual settings, a series of portraits taken in front of a white wall were ultimately used for the covers and inserts. He also participated in the studio recordings and sang backing vocals on four songs (Nem tudtam, hogy így fáj / Én és a francia lány / Ez a válasz / Sose repülj az angyalokkal) as a member of the HIP-HIP choir, which was formed for this occasion. The material, created in collaboration with graphic designer György Pálfi, won the Album Cover of the Year award in 1985.
He then chose an interesting location for the cover photo of the album Budapest Rákendroll, which also features songs written by Gábor Presser: his own apartment, where a rather unusual group of musicians gathered. István Faragó, Zorán, László Komár, Zsuzsa Rojkovich, Kriszta Kristály, Alfonzó, and Feró Nagy, who pretends to play Gáti Weltmeister's organ. Dolly Roll also appears in the photo, but they were not at home during the photo shoot, so graphic designer Péter Kozma montaged their image onto the back wall. (On the left side of the cover photo, the legs hanging off the brass bed belong to Presser...)
1986 saw the release of István Faragó Judy's album cover for Ezüst gitár (Silver Guitar).
In 1988, he created the back cover for László Komár's Elvis tribute album, and one of his concert photos of Attila Pataki was chosen for the cover of Edda's 7th album, Változó idők (Changing Times).
He was the still photographer for the huge summer TV productions in Szentendre, so he photographed the first recording of Tamás Cseh's concert Új Dalok (New Songs), and when he took the paper copies of the photos taken on the previous occasion to the second recording, Gáza Bereményi looked at them and said: Tamás, we have the album cover photos. Graphic designer György Pálfi transformed the photos into Polaroid-style copies and placed them on the cover in this form.
Three years later, the cover photo for his album Hobo Esztrád was similarly taken at the Hobo concert organized as part of the Szentendre television production directed by János Dömölky.
In 1996, KFT used four of the portraits from their first single on the front cover of their album Bábú Vagy.
Tamás Somló, a good friend of Gáti's, asked him to do the photography for his solo album Semmi Cirqsz in 1997.
He contributed an archive photo to KFT's album Édes Élet (Sweet Life).
He photographed the cover for György Markos's album Magam részéről (For My Part) in 1997, and then took photos for the album Tűzkarika (Fire Ring) in 1998.
Previous Gáti-KFT photos were used again for the KFT 25 (Jubileumi Válogatás 1981-2006) CD..
