Under Construction!

NEONBAROQUE – Stuttgart Edition
... His latest series is also a testimony to a change of perspective, to freedom and the joy of unbridled creation. Previously tightly and deliberately composed, his photographs, with their strong visuality, are now layered, amplified, expanded or reduced according to the artist's intentions, and appear as specific universes. It is a patient play with technique, where both patience and playfulness are inherent in Gáti's working method, but the process of creation transcends the amusing superficiality of 'play' and induces a deeper meaning. In this way, in contrast to previous sculpting practices, an even more painterly reality is created, where the artist is more actively involved in the creation of new worlds.
"As a photographer, I have envied artists all my life. The photographer is very much tied to the material he has taken, and I have always tried to use the exposed reality rather than the manipulated one. But in this new genre, thanks to digital imaging and editing, one gets much closer to the imaginary spectacle that engages one, which is limited only by the imagination. It is a different kind of challenge, where the act of creation is much more up to me. "
In addition to blurring artistic boundaries, Gáti insists on the photographic nature of the images throughout, never letting go for a second, and the elaborateness of the final result is testimony to this. As he says, just as he learned as a novice photojournalist in the analogue era how a negative can be turned into a positive copy, so too has he embraced the knowledge of how layering will filter through various creative interventions, how to emphasise the defining details, how to create interesting harmonies and contrasts to help unravel the subject. There is no randomness, no stacking of layers, the construction goes beyond the typical individual voice and vision, both in form and content.
